Event update: Radiant Frequencies, 4 & 5 November, the Hague.
New genres of electronic dance music follow each other like night follows day. Shifting slowly from one mutation to the next, this electronic momentum moves forward with the speed of the internet, weaving a network of rhythmnodes of varying speeds and colours. From the darkness of dubstep to the lightness of UK funky. From the slowness of hiphop to the uptempo of juke.
Radiant Frequencies is a festival exhibition of cutting-edge musicians building bright synthetic structures of radiating dance music. This the soundtrack of the world of high definition gaming, 3D superheroes and superliminal neutrinos. And with zeitgeist-riders like Rustie, Kuedo and Dorian Concept, it is a who-is-who of the now.

FACT magazine highlights Rewire Festival, in which Viral Radio participates on 4 and 5 November in the Hague:
“The festival takes place in and around unusual venues in the heart of the city – examples offered by the press release include former office buildings, a church and an old powerplant. As well as live performances, Rewire will also be hosting contemporary art exhibitions, cinema, artist talks and lectures, many of which centre around the festival’s chosen themes of classical music and the influence of ’60s psychedelica in today’s electronic music.”

This is the first show on Red Bull Music Academy Radio. It marks the return of our show, that is in its fourth year now. In this time it has gone from the early stages of dubstep (Kode9, Digital Mystikz, Loefah), through experimental beat music (Flying Lotus, Dimlite, Hudson Mohawke) up to the point that every artist is his own genre. This is where we stand now, navigating the map of new developments in electronic music.

A brief talk with Tropics

Tropics

Tropics is 22 year old Chris Ward from Southampton. He has released his first EP ‘Tropic Vision’ on Planet Mu today. Juha asked Chris a few questions via e-mail.

Juha I was directed to your music by Kuedo, but I cannot find much about you. Could you introduce yourself?

Tropics I’m 22, just starting my last year at university, in Southampton. I’m studying digital music and sound engineering. It must sound like I’m all-things-music, I was originally going to study film, but the course was canceled at the last minute so I just went for the other thing I was interested in!

J How did you end up on Planet Mu?

I was uploading Tropics demos to MySpace on the regular and Kuedo sent me a message with his appreciation. After a few chats with him and a phone call with Mike Paradinas I signed with Planet Mu for an album. This was around last Christmas now. I was very hesitant on what I wanted released and felt I wanted to work on new material so the tracks on the Soft Vision EP were a little newer, produced earlier this year. Over the summer I started work on an album which Im still working on, and looking to release at some point next year.

Could you describe your music and your musical references?

I have the theory that what I hear in my music sometimes differs to ‘untrained’ ears, so it’s hard to describe (laughs)! To me it’s a very natural feeling I get when listening to my music. I’ve always loved experimenting with large reverb, dissonance, melodies, and throwing together genres with my own twist. I’m constantly messing around with my writing techniques, I try to do a fair bit of field recordings (ambience, background noises). I believe each of my tracks come from somewhere meaningful, it’s a way of expressing myself, something which I need to do on a daily basis.

J Do you play your music out in front of an audience?

Well, I dj and play live. Since producing tracks for the Tropics album I’ve been getting more instrumental which is almost like leaving the breadcrumbs of how to perform it live. I’ve always pictured myself bringing Tropics to the stage with more visual aesthetics than your basic dj set. I don’t have enough hands to do all this myself (laughs), and thought it would be more interesting if I got a friend involved. I’ve performed my tracks as a three piece locally a few times and it’s been great, so I’d much rather perform like that than dj. We’re currently working on our performance, pretty much ready!

What are your plans for the next year?

First off, I’m gonna finish my degree and after that hopefully move away from my hometown. I’ll also be finalizing my album and putting together the live performance with my bandmate.

Thanks Viral!

J Thanks Chris!

Chris Ward aka Tropics has released his debut ‘Soft Vision EP’ on Planet Mu today.

“The man behind ‘Tropics’ is Chris Ward. He’s a 22 year old Brit taking influences from 70’s jams, post-punk and whatever else he taped in his youth, bringing us the radiant sounds of dreamy, summer nostalgia.

His music has already caught the attention of Pitchfork and XLR8R who have posted up tracks by him, as well as a number of bands including Little Dragon who he has remixed.

His music is an utterly gorgeous slow motion mix that sounds like sustained euphoria, such as lead track “Give It Up’s” slow motion chugging disco with ghostly female vocals and chiming bell-like melodies.

“Melorr” is even slower; grinding gently under the weight of its own airy compression, building more and more elements into the mix as the track evolves: voices, electric guitar and ghostly wisps of melody.

“Soft Vision” is the one that has got Tropics the attention, with its lush 80’s production inspired sound. It sounds like it’s in 3d, with huge waves of synths that shimmer and ooze through the track as it subtly grooves along to a the kind of drums which wouldn’t  sound out of place in 80’s stadium pop.”
