Event update: Radiant Frequencies, 4 & 5 November, the Hague.
New genres of electronic dance music follow each other like night follows day. Shifting slowly from one mutation to the next, this electronic momentum moves forward with the speed of the internet, weaving a network of rhythmnodes of varying speeds and colours. From the darkness of dubstep to the lightness of UK funky. From the slowness of hiphop to the uptempo of juke.
Radiant Frequencies is a festival exhibition of cutting-edge musicians building bright synthetic structures of radiating dance music. This the soundtrack of the world of high definition gaming, 3D superheroes and superliminal neutrinos. And with zeitgeist-riders like Rustie, Kuedo and Dorian Concept, it is a who-is-who of the now.

FACT magazine highlights Rewire Festival, in which Viral Radio participates on 4 and 5 November in the Hague:
“The festival takes place in and around unusual venues in the heart of the city – examples offered by the press release include former office buildings, a church and an old powerplant. As well as live performances, Rewire will also be hosting contemporary art exhibitions, cinema, artist talks and lectures, many of which centre around the festival’s chosen themes of classical music and the influence of ’60s psychedelica in today’s electronic music.”

14 Tracks - Present: Future
“The emotive futurist rhetoric and aesthetic of Kuedo’s excellent ‘Severant’ album is the inspiration for this selection. Released on Planet Mu, the former Vex’d man’s solo debut LP is a hyper-fused celebration of classic sci-fi synth music, Footwork and modern Rap, assimilating characteristics of all three into a vivid, futurist fantasy headspace. If you’ve not already copped the album (out this week) we recommend you do so quicksharp, or at the very least check Kuedo’s definitive mix for Fact Magazine, but for comparative, contemporary listening there’s some nuggets in here which you don’t want to miss. On a Footwork and Juke bent there’s Rashad & BMT’s amazing remix of Emika and the hyper-soul of DJ Diamond, plus excellent outsider augmentations from Dam Mantle and Machinedrum. For the Crunk agenda, you’ll find butter cuts like Lunice’s ‘Juice’ and the cold, rollin’ fusions of Desto and Om Unit, next to more curious hybrids of Synth-Pop and R&B from the likes of Holy Other, Miracle, and Balam Acab. Then, of course, there’s two originals from Kuedo to whet your appetite, the heart-in-mouth calculations of ‘Ascension Phase’ and his glorious KMS remix, with a conclusion from one of the original synthesizer futurists, Tangerine Dream and Kluster co-founder, Conrad Schnitzler (RIP).” (14tracks.com)

  • Roly Porter

On repeat: Roly Porter ‘Aftertime’. This must be one of the most efficient partings of a famed music duo in the recent history of electronic music. With Jamie taking the world (and many more worlds) by storm with his Kuedo debut album Severant, Roly occupies the underworlds of King Rat with his debut album Aftertime. Highly recommended.

Moon Life is a project by renowned Spanish artist Alicia Framis. It is designed to speculate on the possibility that humans will live in space in the future. With this thought in mind, the project is a stimulus for artists, architects and designers to create futuristic, radical, political but humane concepts for an extreme lunar environment.

The Moon Life Concept Store creates its own futuristic world in which visitors can explore and test or experience the products and concepts that represent future human life in space. The Moon Life Concept Store is a pop up shop and art exhibition which will travel around the world, with larger contribution by the Moon Academy. 20 international professionals architects, designers, fashion designers and musicians are personally invited to propose a contribution to Moon Life. I am delighted that Alicia has invited me as one of these 20 to contribute to the store with a soundtrack I have called Zero History, a title adopted from William Gibson’s incredible novel.

Zero History is both a soundtrack for the Moon Life Concept Store and an exercise in imagination. Firstly, it is a soundtrack for the store experience by adding music that resonates with the speculative nature of the products and concepts that represent future human life in space. The artists selected here, from Kuedo and Kode9 to Phonophani and Philip Jeck, are all contemporary explorers of new musical possibilities. Their music, oneiric in texture and propulsive in rhythm, evokes a nostalgia for the future. Secondly, this is an attempt to imagine the synthesis of conflicting emotions inflicted by leaving behind life on Earth for a new existence on the Moon: a sense of loss of a past that has no future, and a longing for a future that has no past.
