Last Friday at the Off Centre Festival in the Melkweg was the first time that I used Serato after returning from a two week tour with Knalpot through Russia and Eastern Europe. Having had the chance to experiment with it on the road, I have to admit this is a huge step forward for me as a DJ, one that gives me the opportunity to weave together threads of (dance) music in a whole new way.
DJing for me is creating a momentum, mood and space with existing music. Having been limited by the size of my bag and the capacity of vinyl and CDs, working with an extended digital collection and an intuitive interface opens up a whole new world. To underline this, here is the tracklist of the music I played last Friday, to give you an idea of my current selection.
1. Fennesz – Rivers Of Sand
2. Ras G & The Afrika Space Program – Return From The Great Unknown
3. Journeyman – Tuft Er

6. Africa Hitech – Sound Of Tomorrow
7. James Blake – CMYK

“It’s not a genre, but purple is the colour we all get along with,” says Joker, whose latest release is called Purple City. One of Gemmy’s first tracks was called Purple Moon, and a Purple Wow album from the three of them is in the planning stages, in addition to their forthcoming solo albums.
“When you hear a song, you envisage things: soul music is mahogany, basslines are yellow,” says Joker. This seems as good a point as any for me to ask if they are aware of synaesthesia, a dissociation of the senses that causes those with the condition to “hear” in colour, or to “taste” sound.
“It doesn’t surprise me, because the human brain is extraordinary – we don’t even use most of it,” says Joker. “I wouldn’t say I suffer from synaesthesia, but I can hear a sound and write a colour down. My friend was playing me a tune the other day, and I’m like, ‘Your bassline sounds kind of orange.’”

The city of Bristol has had a special place in the development of bass music for more than 20 years. Musicians like Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky, Smith & Mighty, Krust and Roni Size, are established artists on the forefront and even main engineers of jungle and trip hop.
With the explosion of dubstep since 2005, a new generation of producers has continued weaving these threads. The most recognised sound is synaesthetic by nature, and is elegantly described by how it is perceived in the mind of its creators: purple. It is a mutation South-London’s mystical heavy bassweight (Mala, Coki and others), and radiating video game music from cities like Glasgow (Rustie, Hudson Mohawke) and Los Angeles (Flying Lotus, Samiyam).
Purple was coined by childhood friends Joker, Gemmy and Guido. The last one will play at Viral Radio in June. The first two will be joined by DJ and label owner Pinch, an important node in the web of Bristol’s musical generations. Pinch on Joker: “His music is bold and forthcoming, bass heavy, intricately melodic, and well-structured. I would say his sound is somewhere between Roll Deep’s productions, Low Deep, the Neptunes, and Super Mario Cart! He is very obviously influenced by computer game music but he still manages to evoke a strong sense of emotion.”
We are delighted to present these three imaginative artists at this Friday’s Viral Radio, and we look forward to seeing you there. In the mean time, we are curious to know which artist or track from Bristol has moved you the most.

In the second show we play new and sometimes unreleased music by Dabrye, Starkey, Harmonic 313, Flying Lotus, the Blessings and Joker, artists from Ann Arbor, Philadelphia, Sydney, Los Angeles, Glasgow and Bristol. We range from the Hyperdub realm to the Bristolian continuum. Subscribe to the podcast, or download the mp3 directly.
