Viral Radio introduces Hyperrhythm at North Sea Jazz Festival this Friday: Dimlite, Hudson Mohawke, Dorian Concept, Mike Slott, Cinnaman and Juha. In 2006, Viral Radio started out as a radio show covering dubstep on Dutch public radio. Four years later, it has become part of an international network of the beat-driven electronic music vanguard. At North Sea Jazz Festival, Hyperrhythm tries to represent the whole spectrum of frequencies and speeds currently controlling dance floors around the world.

Last Friday at the Off Centre Festival in the Melkweg was the first time that I used Serato after returning from a two week tour with Knalpot through Russia and Eastern Europe. Having had the chance to experiment with it on the road, I have to admit this is a huge step forward for me as a DJ, one that gives me the opportunity to weave together threads of (dance) music in a whole new way.
DJing for me is creating a momentum, mood and space with existing music. Having been limited by the size of my bag and the capacity of vinyl and CDs, working with an extended digital collection and an intuitive interface opens up a whole new world. To underline this, here is the tracklist of the music I played last Friday, to give you an idea of my current selection.
1. Fennesz – Rivers Of Sand
2. Ras G & The Afrika Space Program – Return From The Great Unknown
3. Journeyman – Tuft Er
4. Rhythm & Sound – No Partial
5. Comanechi – Close Enough To Kiss (Ghost Hunter remix)
6. Africa Hitech – Sound Of Tomorrow
7. James Blake – CMYK
8. Guido – Mad Sax
9. Lakritzi – Adama (Doshy remix)
10. The Heavy – How You Like Me Now (Joker remix)
11. Slugabed – Take Off (Kuedo remix)
12. Halp – Leek (Doshy remix)
13. Doshy – 3WS
14. Rustie – Nekooo
15. Gonjasufi – Ancestors
16. Dimlite – Kalimba Deathswamp/Kurt Feelingx
17. Lorn – Cherry Moon
18. Radiohead – Worrywort
19. Monky – Badman Nigiri
Hope to see you around next Friday.
Juha

After weeks of secretiveness and diplomacy, the moment has come that we can finally announce our programme for the North Sea Jazz Festival 2010. The festival is widely acknowledged as the one of the biggest jazz festivals in the world, and has a strong reputation for showcasing many different areas of jazz and improvised music from all eras. Viral Radio is outlandishly honoured to host its own stage.
From the press release:
In the past few years in various cities around the world, scenes of musicians have popped up with a heightened interest in complex rhythmstructures of changing speeds and intensities. These hyperrhythms are created by producers who have grown up in an ocean of sound of ubiquitous media, from computer games to iPhones, and who are connected through a myriad of online networks. More than once, these producers know the hardware and software better than their developers, mutating into architects of complex, gravity-defying structures.
Cities as Los Angeles, Glasgow and London are their main protagonists, with labels as Brainfeeder, LuckyMe and Warp. In Amsterdam, Viral Radio has been active as a vehicle for the dissemination of these new electronic musics since 2007, with regular programmes at Trouw and the Bimhuis.
Programme:
Dimlite (CH)
Hudson Mohawke (UK)
Dorian Concept (AU)
Mike Slott (IRE)
We hope to see you all there, and look forward to an incredible evening.

It is the first Friday of the month and that means it is time for a walk in your operating system. Listen to the tingles of your tweets and to the rhythm of your RAM. It is time for Viral Radio, your friendly neighbourhood electronic music evangelist, inviting you to believe in the power of digital frequencies.
On this month’s edition we present two artists we have been following for years and years: Dimlite and Jamie Vex’d. Swiss born Dimlite (Dimitri Grimm, 1980) is a master of mosaic textures and imaginative drum patterns. He is one of the most admired artists of his generation and a distinguished performer. His concerts at the Bimhuis in 2008 and 2009 rank among the best given there in the past few years. Englishman Jamie Vex’d (Jamie Teasdale, 1979) has gained critical acclaim as experimental dubstep duo Vex’d. They released the album Degenerate on Planet Mu in 2005, a prescient example of forward thinking bass music. Jamie has released solo works that are closer related to the video game and science fiction cartoons aesthetic of Hudson Mohawke and Rustie. He has created the new avatar Kuedo, that will release its first tracks within weeks. It is already one of the most anticipated releases of the year.
Viral Radio is delighted to present these two gentlemen of artists at TrouwAmsterdam tonight. They are transformers of their time, musical androids from another galaxy. The evening starts at 22:30, and tickets are 12 euros. As always, Viral Radio hosts Juha and Cinnaman will play their music straight out of the package. We look forward to welcoming you.
The fifth show from the people that brought you the previous four shows. Viral Radio is marching towards its second festival in two weeks time, with Daedelus, Hudson Mohawke, the Blessings, Furt, Icarus and Bullion. In this show, we play new work by Ollie Bown of Icarus, Slugabed, Harmonic 313, Rustie and our good friend Dimlite. We hope you enjoy, and if you do, leave a comment with where you´re from, we like that. Download, stream or subscribe.

Kode9 & the Spaceape (photo: Georgina Cook)
To celebrate 1 year of Beat Dimensions concerts at the Bimhuis, we have invited three of our favourite musicians to perform live in Amsterdam. Kode9 & the Spaceape will demonstrate their Bass Fiction live set, a rhythmically desolate and sonically dense architecture of sub frequencies, whilst Dimlite will display yet again why he is a master of mosaic textures and imaginative drum patterns. Digikid Cinnaman and laureate Juha will play music from a not so distant future in the bar before, between and after the concerts.
Doors open around 11, and the concerts start at 11.30. We look forward to seeing you there.
