Viral Radio

Viral Radio presents Amsterdam

Friday 8 January 2010 will be the first Viral Radio of the new decade. In the new year, the Amsterdam vehicle for well tempered drum machines will investigate the musical identities of 6 cities that are part of the viral networks of experimental bass and beat music creation and distribution.

Theses cities are: 1. Amsterdam (January); 2. Glasgow (March); 3. Bristol (May); 4. London (August); 5. Sydney (October); 6. Los Angeles (December).

On the Amsterdam Edition local wonderboys of bleep hop Zwart Licht will perform live, with the support of their producers FS Green and Sir OJ. Viral Radio veteranAardvarck – DNA testing should one day prove the theory he is the father of theGaslamp Killer – will join hosts JuhaCinnaman to cover the spectrum of bleeps and bass in Amsterdam.

Viral Radio will continue to do regular events in the months in between, and radio shows every two weeks on VPRO’s 3voor12, bringing the next level in computated acoustic stimulants.

Suspect name: William G. Killer. Status: apprehended

The Gaslamp Killer has finally been caged.

The Gaslamp Killer resisted arrest at Rush Hour record store in Amsterdam, while officer Cinnaman lurked in the back.

On Monday 20 July 2009, reported trouble maker William G. Killer was apprehended by local authorities at Rush Hour record store, a known viral radio ’cell’ within the beat dimension. The suspect was taken to the city’s red light district for further investigation today. The result will surface at 3voor12 and Red Bull Music Academy later today as a one hour enhanced interrogation technique (streamed online and available as podcast).

“Want to cry, we’ll cry together.” A short interview with Daedelus

Daedelus

On an average Tuesday in Amsterdam 2,055 bikes get stolen. This happened last Tuesday, and this will happen next Tuesday. What is different though on 21 October, is that the prolific Santa Monica producer and Ninja Tune progeny Daedelus will perform at SMART Project Space on the first Viral Radio event since the festival in June, at the Bimhuis and 11. Daedelus – real name Alfred Darlington – was so cordial to answer a few questions and give a top 11 of his current favourites.

Juha van ‘t Zelfde What do you think of the current crisis on Wall Street? Does this affect your work as a musician?

Daedelus The current crisis will have concequenses, but they may be strangely good: people always become more passionate about music during a recession; sales actually tend to increase. Also there is no retirement plan for musicians like myself so sadly no problem!

JZ What are your thoughts on the political campaigns of Democrats and Republicans? Would you write a song for either party?

D Haha! I did! It was very well recieved, check it out on Youtube under Obama Way so you can guess who I am voting for…

JZ If we would look at your music with Darwinian eyes, what makes it survive?

D Good will and constant evolution (the Darwinian answer); sitting still will get you eaten by another, always better to tell the story of moving on.

JZ Are you feeling a global power shift from West to East?

D Yes in fact, touring recently in China really opened my eyes to the changes underfoot. America is so difficult for culture, perhaps a wake up call is in order. All the US does is think of ideas. Perhaps we should reward these inovations.

JZ What can we expect from your Amsterdam show?

D It all depends on what you bring: want to party and we’ll party, want to cry and we’ll cry together. I think the same can be said from Daddy Kev except he is bring firepower! Maybe I’ll try so too.

JZ Thank you.

D Thank you, and best until!

3. Nosaj Thing
4. Dimlite
5. Ras G
6. Mike Slott
7. Thavius Beck
8. Flying Lotus
9. Current Value
10. Mrk1
11. Maybe Zomby or Take or Carlos Nino or SlowJamDiscoJitGrimeRaveMusinah

Viral Radio presenteert Daedelus live in SPS

Daedelus

Viral Radio Festival 2008

Icarus

Viral Radio has been around since early 2007, covering dubstep and experimental bass music on Dutch public radio station Lijn5.com. With guest appearances by Goth Trad, Kromestar, 2562, Quest and Cyrus, and interviews with Kode9 & the Spaceape, Rob Smith (RSD/Smith & Mighty) and Pinch, the show has closely monitored the many faces of recent dubstep.

It has been invited to host a room at the Paradiso in Amsterdam during Volt, and it has organised two events at club 11 in 2007 and 2008, with artists as Rhythm & Sound, Pinch, 2562, Peverelist, Kromestar, Mala, RsD, Cinnaman, FS Green, Cyrus, Rustie and U Dub.

With the arrival of Cinnaman as co-host alongside Juha (U Dub), Viral Radio is adjusting its focus and widening its scope to present the whole spectrum of contemporary electronica and experimental beats.

Together the two hosts will present the newest brain-tingling electronic music to dance and not dance to, from Alog, Hudson Mohawke and Icarus to Kode9, Flying Lotus and Zomby.

To celebrate one year of bass and beats experimentation, Juha and Cinnaman have set up the first Viral Radio Festival, on Monday 23 June 2008 at the Bimhuis and 11 in Amsterdam. With a line up consisting of a large group of the most idiosyncratic beats and bass producers from London, Berlin and Los Angeles, this festival wants to connect club and concert hall, body and brain, the extravertive and the introspective.

At the Bimhuis, Berlin vanguard musicians Moritz von Oswald, Vladislav Delay and Max Loderbauer (the Moritz von Oswald trio) will be joined by the British post-jungle freetronica pioneers Ollie Bown and Sam Britton (Icarus) in their exploration of rhythmstructures and synthesised sound. L.A. based Take and Dutchman Pete Concrete will play beats in the bar.

At 11, Hyperdub heavy weights Kode9 and King Midas Sound will bring the next generation of bass ‘n bleeps producers Zomby, Darkstar and Ikonika from London, with Ras G and Samiyam adding some L.A. love, and Dutch producer Martyn injecting his technodub.

The Viral Radio Festival will take place at the Bimhuis between 9 pm and 1 am, and at 11 between 11 pm and 5 am. This will be the first and only time these two venues will collaborate, as 11 is closing that week. Tickets will be available online and at designated presale points. Fee: 10 euros (Bimhuis) and 12 euros (11), and 15 euros (festival pass).

More information soon at www.bimhuis.nl and www.ilove11.nl
