Listen to this with Viral Radio at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ

Last night the world renowned Kronos Quartet played the final concert in the Listen to This series at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. On the programme was the Dutch premiere of Steve Reich’s WTC 9/11.

In support of this premiere, Viral Radio presented a special programme with two artists whose work has also been inspired by the tragedy of 9/11, Mark Bain and William Basinski, and three who work with the more abstract theme of dread, Roly Porter, C_DR_C and HSIK.

William Basinski The Disintegration Loop 1.1. (photo: Roel van Herpt)

At the beginning of the evening there was a screening of William Basinski’s gripping The Disintegration Loop 1.1. This eerily beautiful video by the American avant-garde composer consists of one static shot of lower Manhattan billowing smoke during the last hour of daylight on September 11th, 2001, set to the decaying pastoral tape loop Basinski had recorded in August, 2001.

Mark Bain (photo: Hervé Sika)

American vibrations artist Mark Bain showed his work StartEndTime, which uses seismological data from New York during the September 11 2001 terror attacks to create a 74-minute recording of the ground vibrations of the World Trade Centre’s collapse and contiguous mayhem.

The Kronos Quartet (photo: Menno Dudok van Heel)

The Kronos Quartet played for the first time at the new Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. On the programme were works by composers Bryce Dessner, Nicole Lizée, Ram Narayan, Clint Mansell, Laurie Anderson, Aleksandra Vrebalov, and of course Steve Reich, whose WTC 9/11 was played in the Netherlands for the first time.

The Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ (photo: Hervé Sika)

Mark Bain and David Harrington (photo: Shane Burmania)

After the concert, Juha van ‘t Zelfde interviewed Kronos Quartet founder David Harrington and artist Mark Bain on their work in relation to 9/11. Many members of the audience joined in, resulting in a candid conversation between the artists.

Roly Porter

Industrial-strength drones, art-techno, noise and moody synth experimentation came in the form of a live performance from Roly Porter, formerly of Vex’d. Operating in a similar sphere to Raime, Ben Frost and Mika Vainio, Porter’s haunting performance, oscillating a grey cloud of monochrome electronica, sub-bass frequencies and contemporary classical music, made the building vibrate.

C_DR_C and HSIK

Viral Radio residents C_DR_C and HSIK ended the night with special sets full of scifi dread music inspired by riots, warfare and urban upheavals.

A sincere thank you to the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ for the opportunity to bring together these incredible artists. And a warm kiitos to everyone who came and stayed until the end. We look forward to seeing you all again soon.

—
The next Listen to This with Viral Radio will be on 14 December, with a.o. Using eleven high-definition video projectors, Aitken seamlessly blends imagery to envelop the Museum’s exterior, creating a work that redefines cinematic space. A bold commission that will enter the Hirshhorn’s permanent collection and enliven its public space, SONG 1 allows visitors to the National Mall a chance to witness the first-ever work of 360-degree convex-screen cinema.

Warp and LuckyMe present TNGHT, the new collaboration between...

Warp and LuckyMe present TNGHT, the new collaboration between Hudson Mohawke and Lunice.

DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn play at WORM in Rotterdam this...

DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn play at WORM in Rotterdam this Saturday.

Dabrye, Ikonika, Om Unit, and More on Illum Sphere Remix EP.

Dabrye, Ikonika, Om Unit, and More on Illum Sphere Remix EP.

Warren Ellis has created another SPEKTRMODULE podcast for your...

Warren Ellis has created another SPEKTRMODULE podcast for your interest. One so far unheard of that sidesteps pastiche and mixture, instead delving into dance music’s increasingly complex DNA to fashion something genuinely new, as exciting as the birth of jungle or dubstep. And maybe we don’t need a ‘wot do you call it’ moment anymore to create the necessary shift forward. The dissolving of boundaries in the bass music umbrella, with its mixture of established forms, and the growing interest in genreless club nights and DJ/live sets that embrace the slow/fast idea further hints at this. It’s maybe less a case of ‘wot do you call it’ and more a case of naming it later and enjoying ourselves for now. After all, that doesn’t make it any less new, and at least it places the focus where it matters most: on the dancefloor.”

On Saturday 14 April Vladislav Delay performed at the Viral Radio 5 Year Anniversary at my favourite live music venue Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Sasu has been so kind to share his recording on Soundcloud.

In his own words:

Here’s a good chance to hear how the next Vladislav Delay album (“Kuopio”) after the forthcoming “Espoo” EP might sound like. Recorded April 14th 2012 at the prestigious Bimhuis venue in Amsterdam, the set consists of almost only unreleased work-in-progress material for the forthcoming album. A broken mixer added some nice extra challenge for trying out all that new material in a live setting for the first time ever…

Special thanks to Ron Ruiten and Bimhuis for recording the concert.

Roly Porter / Hessra.

On Friday 18 May, the world renowned Kronos Quartet play the 8th and final concert in the Listen to This series at the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. On the programme is the Dutch premiere of Steve Reich’s WTC 9/11.

In support of this premiere, Viral Radio presents a special programme with artists who have also been inspired by the tragedy of 9/11.

American vibrations artist Mark Bain will be interviewed by Juha van ‘t Zelfde on his work StartEndTime, using seismological data from New York during the September 11 2001 terror attacks to create a 74-minute recording of the ground vibrations of the World Trade Centre’s collapse and contiguous mayhem.

The eerily beautiful video The Disintegration Loop 1.1 by American avant-garde composer consists of one static shot of lower Manhattan billowing smoke during the last hour of daylight on September 11th, 2001, set to the decaying pastoral tape loop Basinski had recorded in August, 2001. Shot from Basinski’s roof in Williamsburg Brooklyn, this is an actual documentary of how he and his neighbors witnessed the end of that fateful day. It is a tragically beautiful cinema verite elegy dedicated to those who perished in the atrocities of September 11th, 2001.

Industrial-strength drones, art-techno, noise and moody synth experimentation comes in the form of a live performance from Roly Porter, formerly of Vex’d. Operating in a similar sphere to Raime, Ben Frost and Mika Vainio, Porter oscillates a grey cloud of monochrome electronica, sub-bass frequencies and contemporary classical music.
