No radio studio found as of yet, however I must admit I have not had the time to look for one due to n8 obligations. In the mean time I thought I would you a status update, since we have been quiet and acting under the radar in the past weeks.

First, follow the making of news via Twitter. There I post links, speech bubbles and thoughts-in-an-early-stage. If you already did, you would know Viral Radio is scheduling a monthly night in 2009 at a new venue in Amsterdam. We have been doing some nights at SMART Project Space now, and will hopefully continue feeding into their system, but this is not the venue where we will touch down permanently in 2009. When I can share this information, there will be news out in the open. But I can assure we are very excited about this prospect of working with the best Amsterdam has to offer, and we look forward to continue bringing brain-tingling artists to the city.

Thanks for following us in the past 2 years, we really appreciate the support. Drop us a line if you have any suggestions or just want to say hi, even that makes our day.

Saturday 1 November – Auditorium - Free
Sound Performances
Pierre Bastien – 21:00
Soccer Committee and Machinefabriek – 22:00
Bas van Huizen and Ezra Jacobs – 22:45
Viral Radio Presents Cinnaman, and 1.1 - Auditorium – 23:30
DJ Conrad – LAB111 – 21:00

“The musicians of Pierre Bastien’s orchestra are machines. And the idea behind it is simple,
efficient and poetic : to have traditional instruments (Chinese lute, Morrocan bendir, Javanese
saron, koto, violin, sanza, etc.) played by a mechanical instrument made of meccano pieces
and recycled turntable motors. These hybrid and self-playing sound sculptures perform a
series of short pieces, charming and hypnotic. ” (Michel F. Côté)

In the recent years, Bastien and his machines collaborated with video artist Pierrick Sorin,
fashion designer Issey Miyake, dj Low, British singer and composer Robert Wyatt and the
Trottola circus. The most recent compositions were released on Lowlands and Rephlex.
http://www.pierrebastien.com

Rutger Zuydervelt has joined forces with soccer Committee’s Mariska Baars on a multitude of
previous projects but nothing has come close to the sheer force of their newest material.
Baars’ bare-bones songs of lament and longing are taken apart and reassembled by
Zuydervelt’s capable hands.. Gentle acoustic guitar plucks and soothing harmonium tones
work magically to highlight the brightest star on the album: Baars’ fragile, beautiful voice. She
is in magnificent form, pulling emotions from the depths
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WSGdYjbv0Q

Bas van Huizen Builds music from processed guitar and voice sounds, densely textured with
slowly unfolding structures. The pieces are subtle, almost understated, but full of finely
weaved detail, with austere & melancholic themes.

Ezra Jacobs makes music from manipulated shortwave radio recordings, focusing on
contrast, or rather on the lack of it. Not so much as in loud against soft or dense against
sparse, but more in the sense of structured sound versus unstructured noise & interference,
http://www.myspace.com/basvanhuizen
http://ezrajacobs.net/

Cinnaman
Dj/producer cinnaman started dj-ing at the very young age of 12. After starting with hip hop,
he bumped into Aardvarck, who showed him around Amsterdam and it’s carnival madness.
He started producing music and is on of the linch-pins of Beat Dimensions, now making it’s
mark on the Amsterdam hip hop and dubstep scene.

1.1
She loves everything about radio and got most of her considerable musical science from it.
She’s the coordinator of Samurai.fm / Amsterdam. She produces the Faces Radio Show on
samurai.fm.

DJ Conrad – Our man behind the Balkan Buro. Born in East-Berlin, playing in the
underground scene, Con rocks via Balkan to Break Beats to Progressive. Enjoy over drinks
In LAB111.

Sir Alfred John Cage Daedelus Darlington at SMART Project Space (photo: Nalden)

I would like to start with an apology to those whom I told this would not be a party. This was outrageous. On a Tuesday evening our two friends from Los Angeles Alfred and Kev dropped by with a bag full of beats and a box covered with lights. Daddy Kev and Daedelus made our brains tingle, in a place with a history of autopsy. “Don’t be dead bodies,” as Daedelus so cunningly put it.

SMART Project Space is situated in a former anatomic laboratory, and has recently opened as multidisciplinary arts space. Viral Radio has been asked to kick off the music programme, and we anticipate a wonderful continuation. Thanks to those who were there, we look forward to the museumnacht after party on 1 November.

What are your thoughts?

On an average Tuesday in Amsterdam 2,055 bikes get stolen. This happened last Tuesday, and this will happen next Tuesday. What is different though on 21 October, is that the prolific Santa Monica producer and Ninja Tune progeny Daedelus will perform at SMART Project Space on the first Viral Radio event since the festival in June, at the Bimhuis and 11. Daedelus - real name Alfred Darlington - was so cordial to answer a few questions and give a top 11 of his current favourites.

Juha van ‘t Zelfde What do you think of the current crisis on Wall Street? Does this affect your work as a musician?

Daedelus The current crisis will have concequenses, but they may be strangely good: people always become more passionate about music during a recession; sales actually tend to increase. Also there is no retirement plan for musicians like myself so sadly no problem!

JZ What are your thoughts on the political campaigns of Democrats and Republicans? Would you write a song for either party?

D Haha! I did! It was very well recieved, check it out on Youtube under Obama Way so you can guess who I am voting for…

JZ If we would look at your music with Darwinian eyes, what makes it survive?

D Good will and constant evolution (the Darwinian answer); sitting still will get you eaten by another, always better to tell the story of moving on.

JZ Are you feeling a global power shift from West to East?

D Yes in fact, touring recently in China really opened my eyes to the changes underfoot. America is so difficult for culture, perhaps a wake up call is in order. All the US does is think of ideas. Perhaps we should reward these inovations.

JZ What can we expect from your Amsterdam show?

D It all depends on what you bring: want to party and we’ll party, want to cry and we’ll cry together. I think the same can be said from Daddy Kev except he is bring firepower! Maybe I’ll try so too.

JZ Thank you.

D Thank you, and best until!

Top 10 producers right now:

1. Samiyam
2. Musinah
3. Nosaj Thing
4. Dimlite
5. Ras G
6. Mike Slott
7. Thavius Beck
8. Flying Lotus
9. Current Value
10. Mrk1
11. Maybe Zomby or Take or Carlos Nino or SlowJamDiscoJitGrimeRaveMusinah

Each month we drop names of artists we are currently listening to and working with before they appear on flyers or on the show. This is the second installment (see the first one), and of course most of you will know the names we name. However, if you do not know them, then this is one good archive to find music of our age.

Bedankt,

Juha
