Viral Radio

Transformers: we see robots in these guys

It is the first Friday of the month and that means it is time for a walk in your operating system. Listen to the tingles of your tweets and to the rhythm of your RAM. It is time for Viral Radio, your friendly neighbourhood electronic music evangelist, inviting you to believe in the power of digital frequencies.

On this month’s edition we present two artists we have been following for years and years: Dimlite and Jamie Vex’dSwiss born Dimlite (Dimitri Grimm, 1980) is a master of mosaic textures and imaginative drum patterns. He is one of the most admired artists of his generation and a distinguished performer. His concerts at the Bimhuis in 2008 and 2009 rank among the best given there in the past few years. Englishman Jamie Vex’d (Jamie Teasdale, 1979) has gained critical acclaim as experimental dubstep duo Vex’d. They released the album Degenerate on Planet Mu in 2005, a prescient example of forward thinking bass music. Jamie has released solo works that are closer related to the video game and science fiction cartoons aesthetic of Hudson Mohawke and Rustie. He has created the new avatar Kuedo, that will release its first tracks within weeks. It is already one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Viral Radio is delighted to present these two gentlemen of artists at TrouwAmsterdam tonight. They are transformers of their time, musical androids from another galaxy. The evening starts at 22:30, and tickets are 12 euros. As always, Viral Radio hosts Juha and Cinnaman will play their music straight out of the package. We look forward to welcoming you.

Viral Radio presents Amsterdam

Friday 8 January 2010 will be the first Viral Radio of the new decade. In the new year, the Amsterdam vehicle for well tempered drum machines will investigate the musical identities of 6 cities that are part of the viral networks of experimental bass and beat music creation and distribution.

Theses cities are: 1. Amsterdam (January); 2. Glasgow (March); 3. Bristol (May); 4. London (August); 5. Sydney (October); 6. Los Angeles (December).

On the Amsterdam Edition local wonderboys of bleep hop Zwart Licht will perform live, with the support of their producers FS Green and Sir OJ. Viral Radio veteranAardvarck – DNA testing should one day prove the theory he is the father of theGaslamp Killer – will join hosts JuhaCinnaman to cover the spectrum of bleeps and bass in Amsterdam.

Viral Radio will continue to do regular events in the months in between, and radio shows every two weeks on VPRO’s 3voor12, bringing the next level in computated acoustic stimulants.

Viral Radio at ADE 2009

We are a little late to the party, but you seem to not mind. Tonight is the kickoff of Amsterdam Dance Event. We thought we would do a special Viral Radio. Since we could not make up our minds, we picked a few artists more than usual. Here we go:

22.00 Pete Concrete (Eat Concrete/Den Bosch)
23:00 Knalpot live (Eat Concrete/Amsterdam)
23:45 Aardvarck (Bloom/Amsterdam)
00:00 Bibio live (Warp/Birmingham)
00:45 Aardvarck (Bloom/Amsterdam)
01:00 Clark live (Warp/Berlin)
01:45 Gaslamp Killer (Brainfeeder/Los Angeles)
02.45 Martyn (3024/Washington)
03.45 Juha & Cinnaman (Viral Radio/Amsterdam)

The timetable should be a little bit like this, but you never know how things go in the end. The event will most likely sell out, and there are only 50 tickets left at the door. So make sure you buy your ticket at Concerto or Rush Hour now you still can.

We look forward to seeing you tonight. To get in the mood, listen to our latest shows on VPRO 3voor12 (or download them at Soundcloud).

Viral Radio presents Mala, Aardvarck, Sgt Pokes and CDR

A few months ago we asked our good friend Aardvarck, if he was given the chance to invite someone for Viral Radio, who he would choose. “Mala,” was his immediate answer, followed by an endless stream of unintelligible animal noises, “hoer” and “zijn we er al?” Mala will now play alongside Aardvarck, Cinnaman and Juha at the sixth Viral Radio event at TrouwAmsterdam. He will be joined by his friend, brother-from-another-mother and fellow demilitarized zone pacifist Sgt. Pokes.

In the evening, starting around 8 PM, Viral Radio will present the second CDR night. Adopted from London, the night is intended to create a social network, platform or hub for aspiring producers, avid supporters and kindred spirits who enjoy new ventures into electronic music. Hosted by Juha, Cinnaman and Mamiko Motto, a line of guests will be interviewed about their music practice, amongst whom Mr. Aardvarck himself. Visitors can bring their music on CDRs, which then will be played on our professional club soundsystem, while their names and track titles will be beamed on the wall.

CDR has been adopted by De Verdieping as a monthly night to share ideas and music. It has been transferred from the Wednesday to the Friday, to connect with Viral Radio and to benefit from the presence of international artists as Hudson Mohawke, Mala, Nosaj Thing, Harmonic 313, and all the others that come through the Viral Radio hub.

Viral Radio starts at 10.30 PM. Tickets are 12 euros, and are available at Rush Hour, online and at the door of TrouwAmsterdam. CDR starts at 8 PM. Tickets are 5 euros, but entrance is free of charge with a CDR of your music. Visitors of CDR can stay for Viral Radio without paying any more.

Viral Radio Festival Day 1: CDR at De Verdieping

CDR

Air strike one. Tony on the alley.

UK clubnight CDR takes its successful innovative format overseas with the premiere of a new bi-monthly session at De Verdieping in the basement of TrouwAmsterdam. Joining CDR’s Tony Nwachukwu and Gavin Alexander will be local Dutch deejays and producers Cinnaman (Beat Dimensions/Viral Radio) and Juha (Viral Radio/Beat Dimensions), plus special guest Hudson Mohawke (LuckyMe/Warp) bringing his distinct head-moving electronics.

CDR’s open session invites music producers to bring their tracks along on CD, giving those in attendance the opportunity to hear works-in-progress. In addition the night will begin with a conversation with Hudson Mohawke and Cinnaman about their beat-making ways, plus tales from Tony and Gavin about CDR and the burntprogress story so far. Taking over the booth to close the occasion Beat Dimensions and Red Bull Music Academy alumni Hudson Mohawke and Cinnaman join forces showcasing their crowd-pleasing record selecting skills.

Building on CDR London and Midlands residencies (plus past nights in Paris, Berlin and Sydney!) these new Amsterdam sessions will begin a burntprogress partnership between the UK and Netherlands, with local musical artists crossing the North Sea to check out their neighbours. With free entry for all, get set to savour a taste of underground sounds like no other: crossing genres, changing tempos and inspiring all.

Furthermore, Hepcat Radio host Mamiko Motto will present the Friday artists of the Viral Radio Festival from 8-10 PM at Rooms of Redbull. She will play the best tracks of the CDR night, and host exclusive sets by the guests of the festival. The line up of the Viral Radio Festival consists of Daedelus, Hudson Mohawke, Icarus, Furt, Bullion, the Blessings, Cinnaman and Juha.

About Viral Radio
What started as a dubstep programme on Dutch public radio station Lijn5 (NPS) late in 2006, has evolved into a network of music events in clubs, online and some time soon in print. This has culminated in a festival in June 2008, that marked the only collaboration between 11 and the Bimhuis in their combined histories.

Viral Radio acts as transmitter of experimental beats and bass music, creating an autonomous network of carriers of all kinds of mutations of electronic music, from dubstep to wonky, and from hyperdub to aquacrunk. Viral Radio on 3voor12 will be presented by Juha in collaboration with Yuri Boselie (Cinnaman), with the inaudible infection by Michiel. A monthly club night will start on 6 March at Trouw, every first Friday of the month. The Viral Radio logo has been designed by Vincent van de Waal.

Next Viral Radio with Joker and Coki

Every first Friday of the month Viral Radio takes over Trouw Amsterdam. After the Brainfeeder takeover of yesterday, with a vicious Gaslamp Killer, a Doggpound-meets-Nintendo Samiyam and a the new-and-improved-never-going-under-150-BPM Flying Lotus, it is time for two signature producers and outstanding bass music innovators: Joker and Coki. The former is a 19 year old from Bristol whose music is released by genre-defying label Hyperdub, the latter the architect of multiple mutations of dubstep’s identity. Both have earned their credentials as unique individuals in the recent English experimental bass music scene.

We look forward to their coming, joined by DMZ host MC Sgt. Pokes. And we hope to greet you next month at Trouw.
